After my mom passed away unexpectedly at the start of COVID, I felt a deep desire to give back, but I struggled to find a charity that I truly aligned with and could fully trust. That changed when my boss asked if I would help give tours of his home for a charity event benefitting Phil’s Friends. During the event, I had the opportunity to meet Phil, his wonderful family, and his incredible parents. Hearing their story and learning about the mission to bring hope and love to those facing cancer immediately touched my heart.
My favorite Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 16:14, “Let all that you do be done in love.” I knew right then that Phil’s Friends was where I belonged. Coming from a large Catholic family, faith and service have always been at the center of my life.
It’s been two years since that first house tour, and now I volunteer every week at the Wheaton Hope Center. I also help with larger volunteer events for schools, corporations, churches, and community groups. One of my favorite experiences was the Gallagher event at Wrigley Field, where hundreds of volunteers came together to make Care Packages and Cards of Hope. I love coloring the cards, praying over the Care Packages, and doing whatever I can to serve. That time fills my heart with so much joy and gratitude.
Through Phil’s Friends, I’ve met so many amazing people who inspire me every week. They’ve helped me grow more than they know, and I truly feel blessed to be a part of this community. I see myself volunteering with Phil’s Friends for many years to come, and I have big goals for how I can help them continue to grow and spread hope.
