I first heard about Phil’s Friends over a year ago when Phil spoke at a church in Lisle. I attended his presentation and was so impressed by his story and that of Phil’s Friends. His cancer story and the mission of Phil’s Friends completely resonated with me, being a retired oncology nurse. Also, several of my family members and friends had cancer. From all those experiences, I saw firsthand the struggles these dear people went through. It broke my heart.
I read Phil’s book and am amazed at his courage, something I often saw in my family and patients, that common thread further seeded a desire to serve. That’s why I love the message that Phil’s Friends brings to people who are battling cancer, to show them that they are not alone. I know from experience how that resonates with a lot of patients. That’s why I wanted to get involved, too.
The week after Phil’s presentation, I started volunteering at the Wheaton Hope Center, where I colored Cards of Hope. I believe God’s plan is for us to love and serve one another, and this is one way I can give back to those who are hurting.
I also support Phil’s Friends financially and with my prayers. I especially love packing the Care Packages, then praying over them with the other volunteers before they’re sent to cancer patients. I’ve even been able to help at off-site events, helping to represent the organization in the community.
Being a part of this positive community is also a blessing to me. I’ve made many new friends through volunteering regularly in Wheaton. We’ve developed a deep connection through our shared passion for this ministry.
I also love the stories on Phil’s Friends website. The joy they bring to me and others is rewarding.
I am so grateful and inspired by Phil’s Friends that I carry their Cancer Cards, which have the QR code on them for requesting a Care Package, wherever I go. I share them with family and friends, even strangers. Everyone I talk to is impressed by this ministry, that the Care Packages are free to everyone and can be shipped anywhere in the United States.
